The Education of Miss Fortune: Day 4

March 27th, 2009 by suuky

Today’s Lessons: Lay Down and a refresher of past tricks.

Treats: Bacon type pieces again, milk bones biscuits, and lots of love.

Lay Down took a little bit of time for her to get a hang of. I had her sit then put the food close to the floor while saying lay down. Most of the time she would hop up and try to get the treat. Finally she figured out what I wanted and now she’s able to lay down.

Past tricks have gotten easier for Missy. She’s even able to do multiple of them before getting praised and treated. I finally got a hold of the good camera so I got a picture of her trying to dance and her loving the baby. Its adorable.

The Education of Miss Fortune: Day 3

Today’s Lessons: Sit & stay, shake, dance, outside, back, and continue practice of previous lessons.

Treats: Bacon treats, affection, and milk bones.

Sit & Stay So today she can sit and stay in one spot for a few minutes. Every time I go to the next room I get to the baby gate and when she comes I tell her to sit & stay. So it clicked and she does it now. She doesn’t cry as much anymore when I leave the room. Sometimes a hear a little whimper then silence, which totally scares me and I run to check. Usually she in one of her favorite spots chewing on a rawhide or her favorite toy. hehe.. I’m a little too nervous about letting her out of my sight.

Shake is still a little shaky. She doesn’t want to do it often even for treats. I guess she’s learned so many other things that shake isn’t one of the more important tricks. She’ll get it eventually. We aren’t in any big rush.

dance
so the other day my sis came over and she’s got two good dogs at home, she decided to teach Missy how to dance. The floor is tile so its kinda slippery and she didn’t know if it would work. Missy kind of did it the other day. Today I was trying again and she actually got all the way up and attempted to twirl. It was the cutest thing ever.

Outside is easier today as well. She doesn’t fight me when it comes to going out. She even initiates that she wants to go out. So we go to the door, I ask her to sit so I can put on her leash (I’m still bad at putting that on). Then I used the “outside” word trigger today and she happily went out. She’s afraid to go down the stairs, which I don’t blame because its high up and well the fall will hurt. She doesn’t mind going up the stairs now that she knows she can make it. The first few days she had a little trouble and refused to come inside. One step at a time and maybe maybe she’ll even poo outside.

Back was just understood. So every time I go to the baby gate I have her sit stay and when I come back into the room I make sure that she’s not on top of the gate so I can move it and come through. So I’ve been saying “back” and waving my arms to shoo her. Without even knowing it I taught her a new lesson.

Sit is perfect now and she just plops on down when I tell her to. Come is pretty good too, sometimes I have to give extra motivation. I’ve been trying to do a lot of different things with her in anticipation of children and such. I pet her when she eats, sometimes I feed her tiny handfuls at a time, and even leave my hand in the bowl. She doesn’t mind me petting her a little roughly and erratically like a child would. She doesn’t mind me holding her, or even flipping her over on to expose her shaved belly. *lol* I hope her sister is somewhat like her and not the wild child of the litter. I’ll find out next Tuesday. Wish me luck.

Comforting Things…

March 26th, 2009 by suuky

I decided to be crafty today and pull out my sewing machine.  I had some old comforters that I don’t use anymore and they are still perfectly fine so I decided to convert them into new doggie beds.   Missy sat next to me as I sewed.  She wasn’t bothered with the loud new noise.  Actually she ignored it and continued to play with her baby and eat her rawhide.   One queen size comforter makes 3 nice size puppy beds.  I used the tiles on the floor as a ruler and sewed the edges together leaving a small gap large enough to flip the comforter inside out and then hand stitched the opening closed.  It’s not 100% perfect but I’m happy with the results. I can almost change the doggie beds daily now.

Missy Loves them.

Puppy Updates…

March 26th, 2009 by suuky

Wednesday I went in to pay for the fees for the original pup that I wanted.  By the way she’ll be named Emme.  I ran into this little sweet old lady who works at the city pound and I told her that I was taking my baby home next week.  She said she was surprised when she came to work the other day and the brown one was gone when the white one was so much cuter.  So to make her feel less lonely they put a giant stuff animal in the cage so she can sleep with. Poor girl, she’s so alone without her sister.  So the ETA for Emme is 6pm March 31.

Missy is sick.  When I picked her up from the vet she had a nose thing which I don’t think she had in the pound.  Comes to find out (thanks for good old google) that one of the vaccines the received usually causes the doggie flu.  So now she’s got this dry hacking cough, which the vet did mention she would have but with her antibiotics she’ll be ok.  Now my worry is that by the time she gets over her sickness her sister is coming home and sharing the same germs. I’ll have to double check with the vet to see if she needs more meds then or if she’ll be ok. *crosses fingers*

The Education of Miss Fortune: Day 2

March 25th, 2009 by suuky

Today’s Lessons: Continued with sit command, shake, sit & stay, come, and off (furniture)

Treats: Alternated Bacon treats and affection (aka no treats just lots of love)

Sit was easier today. She actually sat down most of the time when I told her to. Roughly 8 out of 10 times.

Sit&Stay when I leave the room I ask her to sit and then I put out my hand to say stay. She does it for a good 5 seconds. Its a good start.

Come was pretty easy. I just said come and motioned with my index and she came running over. Sometimes I have to do more work to get her to come to me. Sometimes all I have to do is either say come or just motion with my finger.

Off
was testing. Little Miss Nosy wanted to know what I had on the coffee table so she put her paws on it. I moved them off and said OFF. I did that twice. The third time I just said off and she got off. Later I went to get online and I hear this thud. I get up and who’s standing on her hind feet with her paws on the coffee table? OFF! And she got off. I sat down just to hear the same thud again. I think she’s testing me.

I’ve also been trying the “leaving & coming” without making a big deal out of the situation. Hopefully that helps with the stress of being left alone. Of course my sister came over the day before and was so excited to see the puppy she forgot that I mentioned. “Don’t fuss over the puppy when you first come in.” My other sis came over today and she did good she didn’t fuss over the puppy, but the moment that the puppy was let out it was all over! Total love fest.

The Education of Miss Fortune: Day 1

March 24th, 2009 by suuky

Today’s lessons are: Shake, Sit, Crate, Paper training with the occasional tsk tsk & no no.

Treats: Bacon Strip’ish cut into tiny pieces and then broken into smaller bits.

Shake just happened to be something we stumbled upon. She was trying to get my attention by lifting her paw and putting it on my hands. I added the word SHAKE to it. She did it a lot today. Then again I think I went over board with the treats as well.

Sit took a little more effort. First 3 or 4 times I pushed her tushy down and urged her to sit. When her tushy hit the ground I gave her a said SIT and gave her an instant treat and lots of praises. It got easier after 10 minutes. She’s doesn’t sit every time I tell her to but its still new to her.

tsk tsk every time she goes to open her mouth to “test” out a new piece of the house (wires, carpet, random stuff that she pulls out of nowhere to eat). Just the sound of tsk tsk, no no and she drops the idea and doesn’t even bother to go back to it later. I’m so happy she listens well.

Crate the first night I took her favorite squeaky toy and squeaked it in the cage. She went in after it and I’d close the door. Today I used an actual command in conjunction with the squeaky toy. She cries when I lock the door. She actually cried for 15 minutes today. It kills me but I know better than to open the door when she’s whining.

She has a big issue with separation anxiety. She follows me around a lot and when I stop she’d run into the back of my legs because she keeps going. When I leave the room she cries and cries. I try to comfort her but I’m going to have to figure out some way to deal with that. Today was successful. She learned a lot and I had lots of fun teaching her.

It’s a Girl…

March 23rd, 2009 by suuky

Well the day finally came. I was approved last Friday for the puppy at the pound. I went in and paid all the fees and had her scheduled for surgery asap so I can take her home. I went back to the back and visited her one last time before she became mine.  This time the cage-mate came to play and I felt bad that I couldn’t take her home too.  So I said, “Sorry baby I wish I could take you home with me but I can’t.” So the day ended on a good note.

Today I got a call from the vet to verify the surgery, time for pick up, and notification that she’s sickly.  She has an upper respiratory infection and some worms (round worms & hook worms).  Good thing its not anything big and can be treated with a little meds.  6pm came and I went with my sister/brother-in-law to get the puppy.  We get there, I pay, and waited to be called on.  We get called in and the young vet tech tells me to wait while he goes gets my baby.  A minute later he returns with a puppy in his arms.  I look up and the first thing that came out of my mouth was… “Thats not my baby.” I was highly confused.  Everyone was highly confused.  The puppy that I had told earlier I couldn’t take home went home with me because I refuse to send her back to the pound.  She’s charming, sweet, and one lucky dog!

I’m going to call tomorrow and see what happened.  I’m going to see if I can get my puppy as well.  So this is going to be a bit difficult but why not have twins huh?

Here’s pictures of 3 month old German Shepard/Chow-Chow mix Miss Fortune!

Pound Puppy…

March 12th, 2009 by suuky

Last Friday I went to the pound with my sister and spotted my little soulmate sitting behind bars. I put in an application and after a few phone calls into the pound I finally got someone. My application went through without any issues, they are going to speak with the person who has the other application in for the puppy and then give me a call back. My chances are great! Lets hope I get good news and she’ll be coming home with me in the next few days. Now I need a name!
